A little history....in 1897, the world's first steel-hulled railroad car ferry entered service between Ludington and Manitowoc. By the 1940's, Ludington was the world's busiest car ferry port, with several of the big "black boats" operating 365 days a year to three different Wisconsin cities. The S.S. Badger, the largest car ferry ever built for Great Lakes service, was launched at the peak of that era.
Her mission has changed, from carrying railroad cars to passengers and vehicles, but the Badger's role in the economies and hearts of the areas she serves has not. The Badger is a living legend-the continuation of a century-old maritime tradition, and that heritage is celebrated on board the ship with self-guided tours, displays of maritime memorabilia, and includes car ferry history as part of the Badger's live entertainment.
The only coal-powered passenger ship still in regular service in the U.S., the Badger operates on abundantly domestic fuel. For passenger safety and comfort, the ship blends tradition and nostalgia with state of the art equipment and modern amenities. This year, enjoy a little history-and a lot of fun-on a unique adventure aboard the S.S. Badger!
Sailing mid-May through mid-October between Ludington, Michigan and Manitowoc, Wisconsin.
