Item Description

This dinner for 8  is cooked on the coal-fired galley stove aboard the SS Jeremiah O'Brien, one of two remaining active Liberty ships of the 2,710 that were built during World War II. The dinner is created exclusively for this event and based on menus from historic passenger liners, freighters, Mississippi River paddle-wheelers, clipper ships or other vessels. Dinner includes an appetizer, soup or salad, fish course, main course with two vegetables, bread, two desserts, wine and coffee or tea. Each menu item (including the bread) is prepared from scratch and cooked on the ship's coal-fired stove the evening of the event. Wines are selected according to menu items. Guests are served in an intimate setting in the O'Brien's officers' saloon.

Chef for the dinner is Capt. Walter Jaffee, author of several maritime books including Recipes From a Coal-Fried Stove, based on Dinners for 8 he has created aboard the O'Brien for the past fifteen years. Capt. Jaffee has sailed as an officer in the merchant marine, owned and operated a sport-fishing and whale watching business, been superintendent of the Suisun Bay Reserve Fleet, taught at California Maritime Academy, and was second in command of the SS Jeremiah O'Brien during her historic return voyage to Normandy for the 50th Anniversary of D-Day in 1994. When not cooking Dinner for 8 he devotes his time to writing and publishing.
