Item Description
This is a 40 nummia bronze coin dating to the reign of Justinian I in the Byzantine empire. It was donated by collector Julian Mitchell of Woonsocket, RI.
Justinian lived from 483 to 565 and ruled from 527 until his death. This coins is from this period, an era noted for the recodification of Roman Law into the Code of Justinian - the basis of jurisprudence in much of the world today. He is considered a saint by Eastern Orthodox Christians and some Lutheran churches.
