It offers endless possibilities for unique tour activities, including active adventures and culture-based rural tourism. To walk these ancient paths is to discover the majestic views, ancient customs, and traditional villages of timeless history — an unforgettable Peru experience.
Brief Itinerary
- DAY 1: AREQUIPA-CALLALLI. Excursion begins with the first rays of the sun. After breakfast, start on the scenic route of the Colca Canyon – passing the wetlands of Chullo to watch the alpacas, the highest point of the journey, Portón del Colca (14,104 feet above sea level) and enter the highlands of the Colca. More highlights: Pre-historic art at Cuevas de Pirita o Mollepunco, impressive volcanic rock formation known as the Castillos Encantados ("Enchanted Castles"), traditional lunch at a family hostel Torre Blanca, and meeting local artisans from Callalli.
- DAY 2: SIBAYO-TUTI-CANOCOTA. Visit the Paraqra archeological site and learn about the ancient Kollawas techniques of mummification. Eat like the locals in the River Colca area. Visit the Temple of Santa Cruz, and continue the journey, crossing the River Colca to Canocota, where accommodations in family lodgings are provided. More highlights: a local ritual honoring Pacha Mama ("Mother Earth"), dinner, campfire, and story telling.
- DAY 3: WALKING THE TRAIL OF THE KOLLAWAS. After breakfast, go for a walk on the Kollawa Trail and enjoy medicinal hot baths at the La Calera hot springs. Lunch at a country-style restaurant, Cóndor Wasi, and enjoy a siesta in the neighboring town of Yanque. Free afternoon.
- DAY 4: TOWARDS THE TERRITORY OF THE CONDOR. After breakfast and a presentation of the dance of love, the Wititi, depart for the lookout point Cruz del Cóndor to see the famous condors in flight in the Colca Canyon. Reflect on the marvels of the deepest canyon in the world and the majestic flight of the Andean condor at the condor sanctuary. More stops at lookout points, wayra punko ("door of the wind") and antawilke ("lookout to the mysterious lagoons"). Over on the other side of River Colca, visit the towns of Lari, Ichupampa and Coporaque. After lunch, take a bus to the “white city” of Arequipa.
