WHY WE NEED YOUR HELP
- Birth defects are the leading cause of infant death;
- We are the ONLY organization that has a National Birth Defect Registry. Our registry studies the associations between birth defects and exposures to radiation, medication, alcohol, smoking, chemicals, pesticides, lead, mercury, dioxin and other environmental toxins.
- Birth defects are rising and only 20% of birth defects are attributed to genetics.
- In 2004, birth defects accounted for more than 139,000 hospitalizations. Hospital costs for these conditions alone totaled $2.6 BILLION which doesn’t account for rehabilitation costs, special education and lost work time. Birth defects present an enormous financial burden on our society and our families, not to mention the emotional costs.
About Us: Birth Defect Research for Children, Inc. (BDRC) is a national 501(c)(3) non-profit organization founded in 1982. TAX ID: 59-2193816 registered in the state of Florida. Our mission is to find the cause(s) of birth defects and to provide parents and expectant parents with information about birth defects and prevention strategies. To find the preventable cause(s) of birth defects, BDRC has created a powerful tool known as the National Birth Defect Registry. This registry, designed through a collaboration of seven prominent scientists, can find patterns and clusters of birth defects which leads to the discovery of the causes of birth defects.
