MarketPlace: Handwork of India is offering beautiful, one-of-a-kind quilts to support our social development programs for women and children in Mumbai.

MarketPlace: Handwork of India is a nonprofit, fair trade organization that works to increase economic opportunities for low-income women in India, and empower them to bring about changes in their lives, their families and their communities. Today, MarketPlace works with 480 women around the city of Mumbai who form 14 artisan cooperatives that produce clothing and home décor items currently sold fair trade in the U.S.

We have collaborated with quilting guilds around the country in an effort to raise money for social development programs for these cooperatives.  Most of the products made by these women use beautiful hand-dyed and hand-embroidered cotton fabrics, and inevitably, there are scraps and lengths left over after production.  These pieces of fabrics, showcasing traditional techniques such as hand block printing, hand batik, tie-dye and ikat, are transformed into  amazing one-of-a-kind quilts by talented quilters throughout America.
