May is upon us and it's Raining Dachshunds.
It's Raining Dachshunds! Hardly a day goes by that we aren't being asked to take a Dachshund in that is in need of a forever home. From Dachshunds being rescued from breeder/puppymills, to stray pickups, to Dachshunds in need of a second chance, they are coming like the clouds on the wind.
The Board of Directors has taken on a bold initiative here at AADR. We are working on the establishment of a Dachshund Halfway House! For years, we have relied on one primary home to take in almost every dog that is entrusted to us. More than 200 dogs per year have gone through that single home, sometimes swelling to 20 dogs in various stages of preparation for moving onto foster then forever homes. This person's heart has been huge, but, it is not a sustainable model. Last year a vision was cast. An intake facility that would provide a short time turnaround for dogs coming into our resucue. This will NOT replace our foster system, we are still in critical need of foster space! But, what this does give us is a place to take in a number of dogs, get them vetted, then get them headed quickly to foster homes, a period of seven to ten days for most cases!
This is a bold step. It has been discussed and debated and investigated. But, we are now united in moving forward. This makes AADR more sustainable! It means we are taking steps to ensure that Dachshunds tomorrow in need of our help can get it. In taking this step, we need your help. We aren't going to take away from our funds needed for operating expenses (there is zero paid out to anyone in AADR, we are 100% volunteer). Most of our expenses are for veterinary care, then administrative costs for supplies, food, etc.
Events like our auction are our future! They are providing that bridge between donations (thanks so much for all of them) and fees (so often short of the actual cost of care provided for an animal). Hopefully, you will find some really neat items on our auction page to bid on! Scoring a nice, unique item and helping a Dachshund out at the same time is going to be an awesome experience. Think about it, you aren't just buying a nice item, you are giving a Dachshund tomorrow -- you are literally the wind blowing the clouds in their life away -- to a sunny tomorrow!
