So Percussion invites you to our Annual Benefit April 25th!

So Percussion is thrilled to honor Jeremy Geffen at our annual Benefit on April 25th, 2019. Jeremy is Senior Director and Artistic Adviser at Carnegie Hall, where he has been one of the major forces behind So’s audacious shows. In addition to presenting us, Carnegie has commissioned new percussion works by Steve Mackey, Shara Nova, Julia Wolfe, and more. When we asked Jeremy what was his favorite So Percussion show at Carnegie, he told us it was our 2012 John Cage Centenary.

This event featured a prominent digital clock behind the stage that counted down continuously backwards from 91′ to zero. We timed all of our performances to end right at the buzzer in a playful tribute to Cage’s timed pieces such as 4’33”.

In honor of that performance and Jeremy’s hand in bringing it to life, our benefit this year is inspired by the ideas and work of John Cage. We will use chance procedures to determine performances throughout the night, mixing ambient works with featured performances by So Percussion, the same combination of “rigor and bedlam” that The New Yorker’s Alex Ross noted in his review of the Carnegie event. The evening will culminate in So Percussion performing our signature version of Cage’s barn-burner Third Construction.

It will be a totally unique event on New York’s spring gala scene, not to be missed!
