C4RJ is a nonprofit partnership of community members and police departments that offers restorative justice in the wake of crime. Its aim is to provide a process by which victims are heard and understood, offenders take responsibility for harm, and where loved ones and community members offer support. The criminal justice system typically focuses on punishing offenders, and pays little attention to the needs of victims. Restorative justice focuses on the needs of the victim and harm done to the community. Our model shifts focus from punitive to constructive methods of accountability, serving victims, engaging community members, and helping offenders acquire skills to make better choices. C4RJ is the only program of its kind in the region. It receives referrals from police departments, who are trained in the process and value a restorative justice approach. C4RJ's success is driven by: low recidivism rates, meeting victims' needs, and reducing dependence on local courts and related costs.
