he Center for Teen Empowerment (TE) empowers low-income urban youth ages 14 to 21 from Boston and Somerville, MA and Rochester, NY to identify the most pressing issues in their communities and to develop a strategy to address those issues. Using TE's interactive model, the project builds the leadership skills of these at-risk youth and trains them to do the planning and problem solving necessary to involve large numbers of their peers in an effort to improve their neighborhoods. Each year, TE youth conducts over 150 community-change initiatives that involve over 6,000 youth, residents, civic leaders, and police officers. Over the past 16 years, Teen Empowerment has resolved hundreds of conflicts including those related to homicide, gang activity, and hate crimes.
