Who We Are: The Springfield JCC is both a recreational and learning facility serving the Jewish and general communities of the Pioneer Valley. Everyone, including the general public, is welcome at the Springfield JCC. Located on the Longmeadow/Springfield line, the SJCC is a non-profit organization offering programs for all ages, including preschool, youth and teen programs, adult life programs, senior adult life programs, and is home to the JCC Health & Fitness Center. Our Programs: Plotkin/Grinspoon early childhood Programs: The Springfield JCC offers full day and half day preschool and day care programs in a safe, nurturing environment. Programs offer the highest quality education with curriculum created specifically for every age group. The facility offers an indoor playscape, gymnasium, and three outdoor playgrounds. Kids Space out of school programs: After school programs are being offered to children between the ages of 4.9 years and 12.9 years. Programs include Kids Space, which runs from 3pm to 6pm and includes a wide range of activities, games, and homework time. In addition, a variety of after school classes are offered including chess, knitting, and basketball. We also offer vacation camps and interim camps (these camps usually include fun field trips!). We also offer high-quality Programs for Children with Special Needs. Teens: Teens are invited to exercise, socialize, get advice, and participate in activities at the JCC, which provides a safe environment. Programs include the drama club, arts fest, Maccabi Games, fitness classes, PSAT/SAT prep classes, oil painting, game room, and community service opportunities. Adult Life: A variety of cultural, social, recreational and educational programs are available to you through Life Lessons. These include road trips to shows, museums, spas, and missions. Classes are also offered to broaden your horizons in topics such as art appreciation, networking, creative writing, knitting, internet, and many more. Senior Adults: Seniors are a vital part of the Springfield JCC and are invited to participate in many activities. Social opportunities, classes, discussion groups, trips, health, and special events are among the programs offered to seniors. In addition, the Senior Connection newsletter, information service, transportation, meals program and clinics are available. Jewish Life: Maintaining the Jewish heritage and community is the core of the mission of the Springfield JCC. Programs are designed for everyone ranging from early childhood to seniors and include activities such as the adult mini school, Jewish singles group, and book club. Events include First Light Hanukkah, Purim Carnival, Sukkot Spectacular, Jewish Book Fair and many others. Summer Camps: JCC Summer Camps 2011 brochures are presently available. Day camps and specialty camps are offered throughout the summer at the Springfield JCC. Activities include swimming, crafts, tennis, nature walks, volleyball and many others depending upon your child's age and interest. JCC Health & Fitness Center: The JCC offers a comprehensive fitness center. Facilities include exercise and weight rooms, pool, racquetball and squash courts, basketball court, and tennis courts. In addition, babysitting is available while you workout. - Athletics include team sports such as basketball (intramural leagues and men's 3-on-3 leagues), swim teams, Superbowl triathlon, and bodypump. - Aquatics offer open swim times as well as classes for childen, adults, and seniors. Classes include water aerobics, swimnastics, active adult pool fitness, pain free pool exercises, and masters swim, and private and group lessons. - Fitness programs include personal training which can be specialized for golf, skiing, or triathlon training. In addition, a variety of classes including yoga, kickboxing, cycling, water aerobics, zumba, and others are available. Our Mission: Our commitment to you is to serve as an agency for Jewish identification; to enrich Jewish life; to foster unity within the Jewish community; to enhance personal, social and physical development; and to promote the well being of the Jewish and general community and worldwide Jewry. For more than fifty years, the Springfield Jewish Community Center has fulfilled its mission through programs such as: Jewish education and cultural arts; state-of-the-art fitness and aquatics; top-rated Senior Net program; thriving programs for all ages, including an enriching summer camp; and a strong presence in the world-renowned JCC Maccabi Games. Year after year, we strive to provide you with positive experiences. Our History: Timeline 1895: High-school student Henry Lasker organizes the Young Men's Hebrew Association for the purpose of elevating its members and the community by adapting them to the customs and institutions of the American people. First location: Rented clubrooms on Worthington Street in Springfield and a picnic area on Riverdale Road in West Springfield. 1906-1921: The location of the YMHA was moved from Worthington Street to Main Street above Barnett's Cigar Store, and later to Bridge and Dwight Streets. 1921: A new building is dedicated on Sargeant Street. The first full-time paid secretary was hired. 1936: The former Holbrook mansion on Maple Street undergoes renovations and becomes the new home of the YMHA. 1949: The Center holds its first meeting as the Jewish Community Center, leaving the YMHA name behind. 1954: A new center is constructed on Dickinson Street. 1995: The Springfield JCC celebrates 100 years of serving the Jewish and general community. 2004: The Springfield JCC celebrates fifty years at its present location.
