It comes as no surprise that technology has enabled significant transformations in the way children learn today. Students can do real-time research through the internet, obtain rapid teacher feedback, and share ideas with classmates instantaneously. The pace of learning is at an all-time high, and even the state of California has mandated annual Common Core testing 3rd - 8th grade to be conducted on computers where questions are adjusted based on student responses.
Every year, parents have the opportunity to fund a District need that would directly support excellence in our children’s education. This year, to enable our children to be well-prepared for learning in the 21st century, the Las Lomitas School District has asked parents to fund Google Chromebooks for the classrooms.
Google Chromebook carts have been piloted in some classrooms this year. The carts are in high demand—it has been shown to be a powerful and efficient means for students to access information, record their work, and collaborate with team members. Teachers have cited how easy it is to use and how it engages students more deeply. For instance, the K-5 math textbook series, Math In Focus, has web-based elements (videos and test prep materials) that enhances student learning. These feature-rich add-ons are not accessible through the school’s current three-year old iPads which do not support Adobe Flash Player.
If we can raise $60,000-$100,000 now for this year’s Fund-a-Need campaign, our children will have regular access to Google Chromebook carts for grade level sharing or 1:1 devices by Fall 2016. (The amount we raise will dictate what the District could purchase. Funding for teacher training are included.)
