A Salute to the Joy of Making Music
On Monday, May 19, Community Music Center will a throw their annual gala celebration of music making at the luminous SFJAZZ Center. Party proceeds will fund scholarships for low-income youth.
Honored at this year's event will be James H. Abrams, a dedicated CMC clarinet student, for his love of music and his invaluable expertise and service to Community Music Center.
The gala festivities will begin in the SFJAZZ lobby with the Latin sounds of Grammy Award-winning faculty member Omar Ledezma Jr. and his quintet. Fine wine and signature appetizers by Charles Phan of The Slanted Door will be served and a silent auction will include vacation rentals, tickets to SFJAZZ, SF Symphony, and SF Opera events, rare wine lots, and gifts certificates to some of the Bay Area's finest restaurants. Inside the Miner Auditorium, award-winning composer, bassist, bandleader and educator Marcus Shelby will lead his CMC Teen Jazz Orchestra on stage to kick off the evening. Short performances by other exceptional CMC students and faculty will precede a lively auction with Wes Sparling of Bonhams & Butterfields.
Headlining is pianist Jon Nakamatsu, a Van Cliburn gold medalist with a remarkable story. Before entering the Cliburn competition, which is widely recognized as one of the world's most important, Nakamatsu was a high school German teacher with a bachelor's degree in German Studies and a master's degree in Education from Stanford. Since his prestigious gold medal win, Nakamatsu's performing career has taken off. He has appeared at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center and the White House, soloed with leading US orchestras and has now recorded nine CDs which have earned him international acclaim.
Proceeds from this brilliant musical evening will benefit the youth scholarship fund at Community Music Center, a non-profit music school and performance space that has been making music accessible to the Bay Area since 1921.
