Believers in participatory, community-based creativity are invited to this kickoff event / fundraiser in celebration and support of FIGMENT NYC’s ninth annual season. This party celebrates the spaces, artists, DJ’s, life & culture of mid-80s New York and honors the founders of Blue Man Group and Blue School.*
This kickoff event / fundraiser will feature food, drink, dancing, entertainment, sneak-peaks of works by participating artists, raffles, a silent auction and plenty of surprises!

FIGMENT NYC will once again be presenting The Manifestation Award, honoring individuals for their contribution to bringing participatory art to the public realm.
This year’s award is being presented to Matt Goldman (Co-Founder of Blue School and Blue Man Group) and Renee Rolleri (Co-Founder of Blue School). From its beginnings in the East Village, Blue Man Group has forever changed staged theater by facilitating audience participation through inspired, engaging non-verbal performance. Blue School is a further extension of that, supporting inquiry-based learning that fosters creativity, community, self-expression, stewardship & collaboration with a purpose to serve and be full participants in an ever changing world.
**Below 14th Street (1986)
New York City, 1986: Reagan is in office, Koch is the mayor and in the face of trickle down economics, the AIDS epidemic and reduced funding for the arts, downtown NYC is the crossroads where anyone can show up to places like Area, The Saint or Paradise Garage to dance and hang out with people from all walks of life. The community garden movement is in full force, reclaiming abandoned and disused lots around the East Village offering free, public space for performances, protests, gatherings and art happenings. No one is judged and everyone is celebrated for being themselves, for expressing their creativity and passions. From this hotbed emerged artists like Keith Haring, who brought public art and community projects to the city on a street level like no one before. Jonathan Larson would write Rent. Madonna’s self expression would inspire a generation. And gospel artist Candi Staton would preach for young hearts to be free.
