Joan K. Davidson
Joan K. Davidson is a noted philanthropist and civic leader who lives in New York City and the Hudson River Valley, where her historic home, Midwood, is the center of family and community events. From 1977 to 1993, she was president of the J. M. Kaplan Fund, a New York philanthropic foundation established by her father in 1945 and well known for its innovative support of the environment, preservation, the arts, and civil liberties. In 1995, as president emeritus of the Fund, she founded its Furthermore grants in publishing program, which she continues to lead today. In addition to her leadership of Furthermore, Joan Davidson chaired the 2009 Hudson-Fulton-Champlain Quadricentennial Commission, chaired the New York State Council on the Arts, served as Commissioner of the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation & Historic Preservation, and was the Democratic candidate for State Senate from Manhattan’s Upper East Side.
