Description

This 36X48 oil painting on canvas is an artistic collaboration between Houston artist Hanh Tran and Houston Dynamo defender Michael Chabala. The dynamic duo hopes to garner awareness and raise funds for The Rise School through an online auction that will go on throughout the summer.

The painting is a depiction of Chabala’s life and achievements. Beginning in the top left corner, the Hollywood sign is a recognizable symbol for California, Chabala’s home state. The bottom left corner represents Chabala’s grandfather. The Lincoln Memorial, in Washington D.C., was his late grandfather’s favorite place to visit, and it holds many good memories. That particular part of the painting is blurred to show the intense struggle that Chabala went through after his passing. The top right corner is the Houston skyline, marking his move to Houston and the beginning of a new chapter as a Houston Dynamo player. The bright orange Texas in the foreground is his proclamation that he identifies as a Texan and considers Texas his home, and the orange is a hail to the Houston Dynamo. The rose signifies Portland, Oregon, “Rose City”, where Michael played for the Portland Timbers for the 2011 season. The soccer ball evokes his career as an athlete and the yellow soccer cleats, hanging on the edge of Texas is a symbol of transition, signifying a major shift in his life, moving from soccer to the next stage of his life, their positioning near the skyline, signifies his new profession as a businessman. Finally, the boots in the lower right corner represent Hanh, his friend and a local artist. The heart’s veins run through each section of the painting, revealing his deep connection and physical and emotional ties to each stage in his life, all making Chabala who he is today.

During the online auction, the painting will travel throughout Houston this summer, ending at The Rise School. Visit the Hanh Gallery Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/HanhGallery?fref=ts) to see where it will appear next.
