Billie Jean King has long been a champion for social change and equality. King created new in-roads for women in and out of sports during her legendary career and she continues to make her mark today. She was selected as "Outstanding Female Athlete of the World" in 1967, was the first woman to be named Sports Illustrated "Sportsperson of the Year" in 1972, was honored with the renaming of the National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows to the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in 2006, and received the Medal of Honor in 2009 by President Obama.
