Item Description

Shambhala Sun editor-in-chief Melvin McLeod recounts this story of his meeting with Thich Nhat Hanh and the "Mindfulness is a source of happiness" calligraphy from which this print is taken:

"When Thich Nhat Hanh agreed to be interviewed for the Shambhala Sun in the summer of 2009, his indispensable lieutenant, Sister Chan Khong, suggested I attend the entire five-day program he was giving at Stonehill College in Massachusetts. I didn't realize how lucky I was. This was the major retreat for Thich Nhat Hanh's East Coast sangha, held every two years, and it was a transformative experience to join with his community and hear him teach. It was simply the best and most effective presentation of the basic principles of Buddhism that I have ever heard. As I listened to his first talk I thought to myself, This message about mindful living is so powerful and undeniable that millions of people should and could hear it. As he said in our interview he was presenting original Buddhism with a Mahayana view. Thich Nhat Hanh was clearly tired when we spoke, and after the retreat he had to go into hospital for two weeks. But he was kind enough to spend an hour with me, and to offer these calligraphies to the Shambhala Sun. We are deeply honored by his support for our work."

Thich Nhat Hanh is a Vietnamese Buddhist monk, poet, scholar, and peace activist. He was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 1967 by Martin Luther King Jr. for his efforts in generating peace and reconciliation in his native country. Thich Nhat Hanh travels internationally, teaching from his book The Art of Mindful Living.

"Mindfulness is a source of happiness" is also available from the Shambhala Sun's Online Store. The print is an archival-quality, fine-art giclée reproduction capturing every nuance of the original art.
