Item Description

Robert Smithson (1938-1973) moved into the vast, open spaces of the American West, using the land itself as an artistic medium.  Best known for his pioneering earthworks—the most famous is Spiral Jetty in the Great Salt Lake—Smithson's legacy extends far beyond his remarkable interventions in the landscape.

This spring the Utah Museum of Fine Arts is mounting its most ambitious contemporary exhibition ever.  The Smithson Effect narrates the story of Smithson's influence on contemporary artists, underscoring his radical approach to making and disseminating art.  Presenting a dramatic range of objects—sculptures, paintings, photographs, films, videos, installations, and works of sound art --The Smithson Effect registers Smithson’s mode of working across mediums.

Jill Dawsey, Acting Chief Curator/Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art, will be your personal guide through “The Smithson Effect.”  Family Membership (good for two adults and your children under 18) is a great way to share the endless fascination of the visual arts.
