Item Description
About the artist:
The name Gijsbert van Frankenhuyzen is most readily recognized from his 17 years as art director for the now privatized Michigan Natural Resources magazine. It is also through the state that his five habitat posters of the wetlands, dunes, rivers, Kirtland warbler, beech-maple forests, are well known. Most recently Gijsbert's mural work for Fort Mackinac on Mackinac Island, Fort Michilimackinac and the Natural History Museum at Michigan State University have received much praise and public attention. But his current project is a source of great pride and excitement.
The art of Gijsbert van Franknhuyzen captures his lifelong connection to nature and wildlife. Born in the Netherlands, Gijsbert studied at the Royal Academy of Arts in Arnhem and immigrated to the United States in 1976. Shortly thereafter, he became the Art Director for the Michigan Natural Resources Magazine where he learned about and experienced the vast beauty and natural history of Michigan. In 1993, he ventured out on his own as an artist and educator, sharing his love for art and nature with schools. Traveling throughout Michigan, his programs vary from hands-on painting seminars and wildlife rehabilitation to habitat improvement and wildlife photography.
