Item Description

Chateau LaTour is a First Growth Bordeaux in the Pauillac just above the Gironde River in the Medoc area in one of the major wine regions of France.  The label on the bottle of Ch. LaTour shows the fortress-like tower overlooking the vineyards on the site of a fifteenth-century fortress used by the English to defend against pirate attacks.

The 1986 vintage of LaTour that is offered at this auction, is an excellent example of the style and quality of Ch. LaTour.  The complexity, blackcurrant fruit, walnut scent and density of the 1986 Ch. LaTour is just now being approachable, after 25 years since being picked.

This exceptional wine was donated by Dr. Keith Edwards, Director of the MS Center of NE New York in Latham, NY.  On September 24, 2011, Dr. Edwards had the opportunity to participate in a horizontal tasting of Ch. LaTour vintages, including the 1980s.  The 1982 vintage was the standout in the decade, but the 1986 vintage was excellent and worthy of any Latour.

Dr. Edwards describes the wine as follows:"It is drinking better than the 1983.  The 1986 Ch. LaTour can be appreciated now and for another 20 to 30 years.  It is drinking better than the 1983.  The 1986 Ch. LaTour can be appreciated now and for another 20 to 30 years.  This is really a priceless wine.  The average price at release 20 years ago was $220 per bottle.  The average price per bottle went from $500  in May ’09 to $700 by May ‘2011.  The current value is $800 and a bottle."

Dr. Edwards purchased this LaTour at release and it has been stored in the same cellar under ideal conditions.

Thank you, Dr. Edwards, for contributing this very special wine from your private collection.
