Item Description

A Lamy Bird Whistle, "Oriole", of blackwood and brass, handmade, numbered and signed by Andy Lamy, the NJSO's Principal E-Flat Clarinet! A handy travel case is included. The winner will also receive a 30-minute "birdsong mimicry" lesson from Andy. This whistle has a mezzo-soprano range, possessing a rich and more mellow
mid-range sound, with a frequency spectrum  of about 400 to 9000 Hz.

A Lamy Bird Whistle is the world's first and finest continuous high-frequency precision slide-action birdsong and sound-effect instrument. Of the nearly 10,000 bird species on the planet, the vast majority of vocalizations can be mimicked, with practice, on one of the Lamy Bird Whistles!

About Bird Calling—Bird calling is a marvelously fun art that bridges nature and music, lyricism and rhythm, primal mating calls with poetry and reflection.  This is a patient person’s game… Sometimes birds will choose to ignore even an accurate playback of a recorded sound, and at other times they respond intensely to even poor imitations, songs of other species, and even sounds created on musical instruments! One of the mysteries of ornithology and the study of bird behavior is the variability in responsiveness of birds based on context.

How the whistle works—Place the slide in the middle position so that half of the slide’s length is protruding from the whistle body.  Blow gently into the mouthpiece with a steady stream of air, taking care to purse you lips to avoid EVER touching your teeth to the mouthpiece.  The firm, roundly pursed lips are the only “embouchure” that one needs to play a bird whistle (like Irish whistle and recorder, but unlike the flute, which takes more training and precision to focus and aim the air!)

Item Special Note

Your "birdsong mimicry" lesson must be at a mutually agreeable time and place.
