Item Description
From the artist, Gigi Floyd of Arcata, California: These are melted beeswax collages, a medium I've been exploring for the past few years. There's much I love about working with melted beeswax-----the rich tones, texture, and dimension, the intoxicating scent, and most especially, the wonderful way the beeswax tends to lend a translucency to each collage element, allowing tantalizing glimpses of previous layers. The presence of beeswax mellows as well as unifies the various elements of the collage, and adds a patina that invokes a sense of times past.
I begin my collages with a pre-stretched canvas, and beeswax melting in a crock pot. Coating each layer of the collage with the hot beeswax, I fuse the current layer to the previous ones with a small, but extremely hot, quilting iron. Some collages are built with 3 or 4 layers, while others feature many. With this medium, the sky's the limit.
The themes and imagery in my work are often whimsical in nature. My imagination tends to move in quirky directions, constantly combining normally incongruous elements and settings. I'm happiest when giving that 'tendency' free reign.
This beeswax artwork is 6" x 8"
