Item Description

Did you know that Horace Mann campus is currently the site of an exciting experiment in urban tree-planting? The young trees now growing on the New Mexico Avenue slope are 1-2 yr. old local native seedlings housed in the award-winning Waterboxx. Each Mann class has planted a Waterboxx & tree. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HRF2bUBPA90

Now you can own your own Waterboxx! Your winning bid entitles you to either the original high-tech plastic version (re-usable for up to 10 years), or the new bio-degradable version (made of recycled cardboard). Both are currently being used on the Mann campus. Trees for the Planet, a DC non-profit, is leading this ecological and educational program to innovate and promote the planting of canopy trees on private property in DC, which is key to achieving the city's goal of 40% canopy overage.

Additionally, you may consider an additional purchase of a native tree, even one of the species growing on the Mann campus. Peter Forbes, President of Trees for the Planet (our Mann neighbor at Sutton Towers) will be available to consult with you on selecting a variety.

Additionally, Peter Forbes, President of Trees for the Planet (our Mann neighbor at Sutton Towers), will consult with you on selecting a variety and location; and he will personally plant your tree.  For more information on the Mann project and TFP’s work, see www.treesfortheplanet.org.

Tree selections include:

Witchhazel, Ninebark shrub, Hop Hornbeam, American Holly, Arrowwood Viburnum, Eastern Red Cedar, Red Chokeberry, Redbud
