Artist Statement: I am fascinated by water & its importance. I regard water as one of the elements that binds us together on this planet. No water, no dice. & its unpredictable power is quite a force to contend with. On its own it won't follow the rules or boundaries, borders, colors or flags. It has a mysterious duality to it; both power & calm. I use watercolors & ink for the underpainting, & Encaustic paint (melted wax) for the top layers. All these paints have watery qualities which can work well to resemble water & capture the energy of falling water. The processes vary from inky washes to pouring molten wax, scraping back, & melting with a fiery torch. Perhaps its ironic to use such an elaborate equation of mark making to represent an abstract interpretation of something that seems so simple - but it isn't. Nature is complex. To me the equation resembles the complexities of nature which provides us with water, waterfalls, life.
