Artist Statement: I made art when I was young, & continued throughout my life. It is how I see the world, how I think of myself in the world. I've always made things to look at, always crafted with my hands. I will get ideas but most of the actual work is done in the studio, some directly on the canvas & some from sketches or from photos. I'm not tied to the idea of creating paintings directly from life, mostly the images I create are invented, either accidentally or as I work along on the canvas itself. The work sometimes is abstract, but not always. I don't mind switching back & forth between the fantastical imagery, the photo based works, & the abstract non representational works. I intend the paintings to be related to each other like different ways to say the same thing, or different events in a story. I paint until it's done; sometimes that's quick for example, two days. Other paintings take longer; some take years. I do work from photos as well as other methods; with this I have to allow the mistakes to happen because I am not trying to accurately copy a photo, I am only using the photo as a starting point which allows me to make something new in the same way as the nighttime stars might sometimes describe a constellation or form a pattern which tells a story. I see painting & the creation of art itself as a way to investigate things; sometimes as simple as the ways in which we see, & again sometimes more complex as a method to try to understand events which are confusing or upsetting to know, for example human conflict or differences in religious belief.
