Artist Statement: "Mapocho" is an abstract representation of the way the Chileans would prefer to see the polluted Mapocho River that bisects the city of Santiago- as pure as the driven snow. While recently visiting Chile I was amused by the drawings for a new civic project along the riverfront, with the river colored crystalline blue. In fact, the river is a most revolting color of muddy brown & flows from the Andes thickly & swiftly through the city. While visiting Chile in 2013, I created a small series of abstract paintings inspired by the exciting architecture, the sights & the colors of modern Santiago. " Mapocho" is one of the series. I often include architectural imagery in my paintings as a gesture to acknowledge the coexistence of organic & industrial forms in our world. I am fascinated by the architecture of nature, the form & function of the body, & the way light changes our perceptions of space & color. In my creations, I also often use glazes to transform light & color to the more ethereal. Originally from Chicago ( 1955), I have lived in the San Francisco Bay Area since 1977. Self-taught, I began painting seriously in 2005 & have shown my work in San Francisco, Oakland, Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, New York City, & Lisbon, Portugal.
