Artist Statement: Joshua Coffy is a self-taught artist living & working in San Francisco. He grew up in a variety of locales from Ohio to New Mexico to Florida & finally California. Moving from one region to another helped to shape his cultural views of the world as well as inspire him to create art in unique & varied ways. Coffy draws inspiration for his Mixed Media paintings from the natural world, scientific illustrations & his love of animals. Joshs work includes many layers of textures including Paper patterns, maps, newspaper articles, & Acrylic paint. Much of his work deals with animals & how humans relate to the birds & mammals all around us. His work is usually a light-hearted & whimsical approach to our ideals about animals. "I was hiking on the peninsula one day & found myself lovestruck with California. How lucky are we to live here? This painting is inspired by that love & it was the first painting in a series of California paintings. The Mt. Lion knows exactly who she is. She is steady, cunning, strong, & a skilled hunter. I chose to paint a Mt. Lion because at the time there had been numerous big cat sightings in the redwoods & it seemed appropriate. I could just imagine myself stumbling across one on the path. There would be a moment of stunned stares....and then maybe, in her eyes, I would turn into a giant cartoon turkey. Hehe. I think we forget about the awesome power of nature until we are alone in the woods."
