Artist Statement: The body occupies & contains space. Our experience of space is dictated not only by our view of the world but also by the body in which we inhabit. I explore the boundaries of human physicality & its affect on our sense of self. How does our body affect space & how does space affect our body? This work is an inquiry into the power dynamics brought about by owning both physical & psychological spaces, studying the non-verbal language displayed in the way we compose ourselves within spaces & in relation to one another. Through stitching, the forms in my work expand beyond personal identity & establish the body as a symbol through which communication & power structures can be studied. The degendering of the figures also allows for the dynamics of masculinity & femininity to play into the subtlety of gesture; giving room for viewers to insert their own biases or experiences when relating to the work. This piece creates a neutral space & form to explore identity, language, movement & space to better understand how our own bodies can be used to communicate our most abstract & internal selves.
