Artist Statement: At the edge of the ocean at the edge of the day, color becomes an abstraction: I wait with camera & tripod. I focus on edges of the surf as the waves retreat on shifting sand. I want to capture the rhythm & motion of the low tide with natural light. The camera sensors record moving color on the digital screen to create a new image over time. The colors shift to blue as the light fades; its dark & I adjust exposures with the histogram. Whether I am capturing evening seascapes, or chasing drifting feathers on shallow ponds, or focusing ethereal reflections of sunlight through blue bottles, I seek images that suggest an object & an atmosphere. With time & motion, I paint with light. I am a San Francisco image maker. A UCSF specialist in microscopy, I combined a lifetime professional career in scientific imaging at UCSF with a lifetime love of personal Photography. My microscopy work has appeared on national science journal covers; my art appears regularly in national & Bay area group shows (Misho Gallery, McKinleys Serenity Shows, 2013 Best of South of Market Artists, Choice 2014, juried by Catherine Clark, two awards & publicity art at Pacific Art League shows). Images from my Ocean series are now part of the permanent collection of the SFPUC building; four have been selected by the SF Art Commission for display in the new SF General Hospital opening in 2015. This is the first C-print made of my ongoing Ocean Beach series. It is a digital photographic image projected onto light-sensitive Paper, chemically developed using a Polielettronica LaserLab printer & printed on Fuji Crystal photographic Paper.
