Artist Statement: When I was a little girl I was a tomboy. I only knew that because this is what folks told me. I never sincerely understood what all the fuss was about, but I clearly understood it wasnt ideal to be considered a tomboy. I always thought it would be great to take some of those moments & transfer them onto Paper. Rightfully so, these illustrations became my 1st solo exhibit, Tomboy: The Art of Nancy Cato. More than a few of these illustrations addressed my complete disdain for dresses. Creating these illustrations really made me acknowledge how painful it was to just try to be me. I had no idea since I never really took the time to engage this part of my childhood. Drawing has increasingly become an incredibly intimate endeavor for me, so illustrating my thoughts about being a tomboy really hit home. Needless to say it has been & continues to be an incredible journey.
