Artist Statement: My artwork strives to highlight important social & cultural aspects of people living in diverse landscapes of the Americas. In the majority of my work, I explore recurrent themes & scenes that were part of my experience growing up & living in different regions across Peru. These include, to name a few, remote campesino villages atop the mountains of the Sacred Valley of the Inca, fertile landscapes of the Arequipa campia (countryside) & humble fishermen towns along the Pacific coast. Ordinary people from different walks of life are a central motif in my artwork. I seek to portray these people, be it campesinos, fishermen, street musicians or day laborers as an integral part of society invested with dignity. I depict them performing their daily jobs as well as enjoying leisure activities at the chicheras (chicha bars), religion processions, or village celebrations, all conveying an image of personal fulfillment, joy & contentment with their lives. Through my artwork, I also seek to protect the beautiful timeless settings in which the scenes take place against the forces of "progress & development". I strive to capture every detail of the rickety doors & windows, the rural architecture of the traditional adobe houses, the ambiance of countryside general stores, & the character of old fishing boats. At the end of the day, I think my main role as an artist is to help preserve such important aspects of my culture so they can be shared & appreciated by my own people as well as by others.
