Artist Statement: I’ve always been particularly fascinated with designing chairs, often looking at alternative ways to build them, usually trying to simplify their construction while always maintaining comfort. This chair might be inspired by cantina chairs and benches, though there seems to be a bit of English Arts and Crafts about it.
This chair has surprising comfort, despite its structurally simple concept and rather severe lines. The double cyma curve of the laminated back gives support to the sitter’s lower back when sitting up, or the upper back when slouching (my preferred position), as well as having a nice amount of flex or “give” in use. Additionally, the seat is buffered to its mounting by rubber shock absorbing bumpers. I use one of these chairs at my dining table as well as my computer. I also have a version with 3/4” thick felt mounted to the seat for extended sitting. This particular chair is individualized by the custom abstract pattern of inlay of different woods on its back.
