Artist Statement: Society is obsessed with surfaces, yet we are told that beauty goes beyond skin deep. The splayed anatomical figures in my drawings work to expose those layers of beauty. There is a certain gaze that when viewing an object can become violative, and I work to question the relationship between the viewer and the viewed within my artistic practice. What does it mean to represent that gaze? Why do people treat aesthetically pleasing objects in obsessive, gluttonous, and lurid manners? At times it feels that contemporary society situates people to be consumed and readily exposed, and call it beauty. My figures work as a physic cartography through human forms and are meant to bring about dialogues human imperfections. These bodies are positioned for someone else's voyeuristic viewing.
