Item Special Note
Artist Statement: "No. 2" is part of the "Water Under The Bridge" series, a subset of Aqua Vitae, an ongoing oeuvre encompassing my exploration of the San Francisco Bay. Here the Bay becomes a signifier for personal metaphor, representing the inverted and distorted reflections that come with wisdom and age. In this work I begin with the pristine white smooth gessoed panel as a tabula rasa to build upon. Using a mudding knife and fingers, I slather on a thick pasty white foundation, allowing the paint to form its own idiosyncrasies and core personality. After the foundation solidifies, I amplify the surface by applying partially-mixed pigments with squeegees and palette knives, allowing the paint to create engrams with vestiges of the substrata exposed. The final layers are composed of single colors whose definitive one-dimensionality attempt to counterbalance the transitory nature of the fluid environment created beneath.
