Artist Statement: We each contribute to the rhythms of the city. While this collective energy helps define our urban spaces, brings them to life & gives them their character, it is our individual participation in this process that is often lost in the mix & goes largely unnoticed. Rhythm No. 12 is part of a series of paintings titled Market Street Rhythms. This series draws inspiration from everyday people on Market Street & observes their role in this greater urban dynamic. Use of abstraction, riotous colors & geometric shapes gives us a feel of the street as we focus our attention on the more organic individuals. This treatment also allows for the blending of the subjects into their urban environment, & vice versa, in order to acknowledge the potent influence one has on the other. By the nature of the images, urban issues, as they relate to the larger culture, are also raised. Whether we are old or young, rich or poor, many of us share the streets of our cities. We each play a small, but vital part in a much bigger picture. --Gala Sadurni
