Artist Statement: Pieces I make are at intersection of joy and awe. Joy of creating something new and awesomeness of recognizing a promise in a random piece of wood, or another found object. I would salvage them, and now they are part of my life. It is a sense of responsibility which motivates people who uses found objects: if you recognize something it is yours, you cant let it to rot. If a piece of wood can wake up imagination, or just possesses an undefined promise, it can be made into sculpture. I usually let wood lay idle for a while - until I can see what it might become. Then I start carving and cutting it to reveal hidden structure, movement, or emotion, until the sculpture is able to occupy and hold space. Visually, sculptures may be very different, but they answer to a common task reflecting on time, scale and narrative. In some of sculptures I tried to make small pieces feel monumental and static. In other works time itself is a subject - its passing, its stillness, and the stress of waiting for something to happen. My goal to wake up an imagination and not to be too literal. To do so I employ structure, movement, gesture. In most cases, it has to be revealed. I am leaving sculptures without embellishment, or with very minimal protective coating: they are part of my biography, witnesses to my life, and should look simple. As if they were found this way, and you just had to look hard enough to find and recognize them. But the major objection sharing the joy of discovery I am feeling in a process of creating sculptures.
