Artist Statement: Who is Ishtar? She is the Earth Mother, the Mesopotamian goddess of fertility. Ishtar's journey is perilous...but she is the eternal Mother Goddess who cannot be defeated. She overcomes each challenge she faces This mixed media meditation was inspired by a trip to the Istanbul Archeology Museum. I was awed by the ancient relicsby being able to see, in the present, something created 6000 years ago. I experienced an intense connection. At this time I also discovered a new material pulp packaging molded to protect fragile products and designed to be thrown away. Their intriguing, beautiful shapes reminded me of the relics I had seen at the museum. So I was inspired to use pulp packaging to create 3D sculptural effects, objects reminiscent of ancient temples as an element of the Ishtar art works. To these I added beach glass and newsprint, other throwaways, to further enhance the alchemy. I believe the old gods and goddesses never die. The ancient wisdom is part of our being. Even packaging materials tell a story.
