Item Description

Autographed by artist! Clothbound,144 pages, 100 color illustrations, 81/2'' x 11 1/8'' (21 x 27.5. CM), published October, 2013.

In June 2013, thirteen sculptures were installed for exhibition on Park Avenue in New York City between 52st Street, adjacent to the Seagram building, up to the Armory on 67th Street. These sculptures were specifically created by Albert Paley for Paley On Park Avenue.

This body of work reflects Paley's current structural and compositional concerns. All of the sculptures are formed and fabricated steel. Several utilize weathering steel, others stainless steel and some a combination of both. In addition, some are painted, either monochrome or polychrome.

The sculptures are not technically site specific, however, the artist has placed the sculptures at locations that he felt would emphasize and bring focus to the ambiance of the site. Due to the visual dynamism of the city, Paley wanted the sculptures to have a presence and create a sense of place. To that end, several of the sculptures are approximately 20' in height, thereby affording visibility to vehicular traffic and pedestrian passage.

Although the sculptures are not kinetic, movement is implied through gesture and balance. Paley's intention is that the sculptures reflect the dynamism of the city, stressing alterability and change. Complexity and attention to detail are fundamental in all of the work. Therefore, the closer one approaches, each sculpture slowly revealing itself, thus affording an intimacy of experience which enriches the pedestrian reality as well as the uniqueness of the urban setting.
