Item Description

This new town package celebrates the legacy America’s Frank Lloyd Wright, most famous architect, left in Buffalo. Six Buffalo area homes were designed by Lloyd Wright at the turn of the 20th century. Today two of the homes are open for public viewing as are two of Lloyd Wright’s designs, a boathouse and a mausoleum which were built in Buffalo in recent years. DARWIN MARTIN HOUSE COMPLEX, a six-structure estate, was designed and built by Frank Lloyd Wright from 1903 to 1905, for industrialist Darwin D. Martin. The Martin House is widely considered one of Wright’s finest Prairie Houses – a signature work from the early years of his celebrated career. Wright himself referred to the Martin House complex as “the opus” and kept the site plan pinned to his drawing table almost fifty years.

GRAYCLIFF ESTATE is set high on a cliff with sweeping views over Lake Erie and stands as an architectural jewel. Sometimes referred to as “The Jewel on the Lake,” Graycliff is one of the most ambitious and extensive summer estates Frank Lloyd Wright ever designed. It was built for Isabelle R. Martin, wife of industrialist Darwin Martin, between 1926 and 1931. The Graycliff Estate is located about 20 minutes south of Buffalo.

The FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT FONTANA BOATHOUSE was one of his most prized designs. In 1905 he designed it for the University of Wisconsin, but it was never built. Years later, three long time rowing friends had the vision of building the boathouse on the Niagara River where it meets Lake Erie. After several years of fundraising and construction the Boathouse opened in 2007. Since the design is retired, there will never be another built in the world.
