Item Description
$390 value for a partial share for 26 weeks of certified organic locally grown vegetables which average 4-6 items per week, to be picked up at Abundance Coop downtown Rochester (or at the farm, if the bidder lives nearer to Newark, NY). This is a participatory CSA, meaning the bidder is expected to join in all the benefits and responsibilities of being a member. Benefits are a long season of fresh food, a CSA community that includes working alongside the farmers once during a few times during the year, keeping a local farm in business, paying the farmers a fair wage, great potlucks to begin and end the season, and a website with weekly farmer updates, and our own FoodBook of recipes, nutrition and storage tips.
Partial shares: 1 shift at Peacework Farm; 1 shift at distribution (Rochester area members only)
WHY DO YOU REQUIRE MEMBERS TO WORK? It puts the ''community'' in community supported agriculture. It gives us an opportunity to work with the farmers and other CSA members, and to see how our food is grown. Members and their families get to see that food comes from farms, not store shelves. We get to know other members by working alongside each other.
WHAT'S INVOLVED IN A FARM WORK SHIFT? Peacework Farm hosts work parties every Thursday and Sunday morning for all 26 weeks of the CSA season. Members arrive at 8 a.m. and help with harvesting, weeding, washing and other tasks. If you can't bend or kneel, be sure to ask the farmers for a less demanding job. At noon, Rochester members' vehicles are loaded with vegetables for delivery to the CSA's cooler in the Abundance Co-op's warehouse. If you can stay longer, bring food to share and join the farmers for a potluck lunch.
WHAT'S INVOLVED IN A DISTRIBUTION WORK SHIFT? Rochester area members only: Workers arrive at the Abundance warehouse 1 hour before distribution time (5:30 on Thursdays, 4:30 on Sundays) help set up for share pick up. For more info visit: http://www.peaceworkcsa.org/about/work-requirements/
