Item Description

First Vine is a U.S. importer that specializes in unique wines from independent producers and grower-owned cooperatives; in most cases these producers haven't exported to the U.S. before. This DC-based company is a favorite of Alliances throughout the U.S., and the group's owner, Tom Natan, has visited Portland and shares his knowledge of wine with local members here, as Oregon is one of the states to which he ships.

Tom kindly supports this fundraiser with two bottles that have fascinating connections to France and to Tom's family history! He describes, "These are two bottles of Château d'Assas wine, from the village of Assas in the Languedoc, just north of Montpellier. The actual château, pictured on the labels, is owned by the Demangel family. In 1942, Simone Demangel made fake ID papers for my father and grandparents to get out of southwestern France in that very house." You can read more about it by clicking here.

  • Château d'Assas Réserve 2010: A full-bodied red from Assas in the Languedoc, made with 50% Syrah, 40% Grenache, and 10% Mourvèdre, aged in oak. Rich fruit and spice, a hint of clove. Serve it with your big red-wine meals.
  • Château d'Assas Classique 2011: A medium- to full-bodied blend of 70% Syrah, 30% Grenache from a cooperative winery in Assas, near Montpellier in the Languedoc. Bolder and fruiter than similar Rhône blends, which tend to be earthier.

Visit Tom's site (http://www.firstvine.com/) for more information and remember, he ships his great wines to Oregon.
