Item Description

Longtime Alliance student and member, Maxine Borcherding, is also a wine and culinary expert. She donates these two favorite wines:

Château La Croix Saint-Estèphe 2010
Château La Croix is the second label of Château Le Crock, and situated directly between Château Cos d’Estournel (second growth) and Château Montrose (second growth) in Saint-Estèphe. The Château was purchased by the Cuvelier family in 1903. The La Croix is 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Cabernet Franc, 25% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot and sourced from vines averaging 37 years in age, planted on garonne gravel over typical Saint-Estèphe clay-limestone.

Says Maxine: "I really enjoy this wine--it is full bodied and fruity with great balance. On the palate there is cassis and red fruits with round Saint Estephe tannins. On the nose, there is plenty of red and black fruit along with that wonderful dusty minerality and rich aroma of a lush riverbank on a sunny summer morning that only comes from good Bordeaux."

Domaine du Banneret Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2011
Maxine describes this wine: "One of my favorite wines in the southern Rhone comes from an astonishingly small domaine of about 4 hectares in the heart of Châteauneuf. Jean-Claude Vidal is one of the few producers who makes his wine with all 13 allowed Châteauneuf varietals, and co-ferments whole clusters in the old style. Only about 10,000 bottles are produced and it is truly a family business with every operation performed by hand. This wine has a Portland connection as well. Vidal’s nephew, Jean-Marc Espinasse, has been here many times marketing Domaine du Banneret and his own wines from Domaine Rouge Bleu. Both labels are imported by Portland’s Estelle Imports. The 2011 is ready to drink but will age beautifully for several more years."

(Maxine is a wine and culinary expert and will lead a tour this September in France. Click here for more information on her upcoming tour.)
