Item Description
American painter, etcher and lithographer Alfred Ray Burrell was born in Oakland, California in 1877. He studied at Mark Hopkins Institute and Partington Art School in San Francisco and in New York City with Chase and DuMond.
Burrell became prominent in the art world of San Francisco, contributing greatly as a teacher and exhibiting locally. Using a low-keyed palette and controlled, short strokes, he painted many landscapes and scenes in and around the San Francisco Bay area. The local atmospheric changes and light variations suited his Impressionist style.
This ink-on-paper drawing is a delicate rendering of boats docked at a harbor. The 4 1/2" X 3 1/4" drawing is matted and held in a 11" X 12 1/2" frame.
