Item Description

8x10 original photograph by the late Dorothy Holby, Cat Photographer. Beautiful work. Is not signed, but her name/studio name is on back.

Holby's first color centerfold was published in Cat Fancy magazine. It was followed by more than 20 others, often twice a year. Her work has also been featured on dozens of magazine covers, including Cat Fancy, Cat World, Cats and Animals. Her articles about unusual breeds and tips for owners, and her photo illustrations, are even more numerous. In addition, she contributed color photography to a number of hardback books on cats, including a children's nature series, and has had two Postcard Books, each containing 24 of her photographs, published by Dover Publishing, New York. Bo-Tree in California has used her work on greeting cards as well. Holby was a language professor at Northeastern Illinois University in Chicago but decided early on to not wait until she could retire to switch to what she really wanted to do. She gave up her academic career in 1976 for art and what evolved into a new profession. She studied Painting, design and composition with the late Rudolph Pen, who taught at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Soon her graphics, embossings and block prints were being accepted in major shows and the sales and rental gallery of the Art Institute. Holby applied her artistry to photography. She was fond of cats and in the early 80's she enrolled at College of DuPage to study photography with Bob Johnson.

Her photographs are a thing of beauty.
