Item Description

Title & Artist:  "Cod Cakes" – by Caroline May

Medium & Size:  Acrylic on wood.  21 7/8" L x 8 5/8" H x 3/4" D.  For indoor display only.

Artist Statement:  An instructor of mine once said, "You should be terrified of a blank canvas." That may sound extreme, but I do approach every canvas with a sense of apprehension, thinking, "Will this one be a keeper?"

This is the first time that my "canvas" has been a piece of wood shaped like a fish, and I must admit that I studied it for a long time with some trepidation. My first ideas ran along the lines of incorporating iconic Marblehead, or a lament on the vanished cod. But I wanted to exploit the shape and began ruminating on various wordplays and cod "things." While turning my cod this way and that and thinking "Cod this....cod that....," up came "Cod Cakes." My sweet tooth must have helped.

Artist Biography:  Caroline May has a BA in French and Art from Regis College. She also studied in New York at the Art Students League and the National Academy School; at the Manchester Institute of Arts, the DeCordova Museum School, and the Visual Arts Center of New Jersey; and in numerous workshops.

She is a Life Member of the Art Students League and an Artist Member of the Marblehead Arts Association. Caroline has had solo shows in Bridgehampton, NY, Carlisle, MA, and Marblehead, and has exhibited and won awards in juried shows in New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Massachusetts. She has been represented by galleries in Eastern Long Island, and her work is in many private collections.
