Item Description

Title & Artist:  "The Wave" – by Holly Aloha Jaynes

Medium & Size:  Watercolor with varnish on wood.  21 7/8" L x 8 5/8" H x 3/4" D.  For indoor display only.

Artist Statement:  I painted this cod after the style of Gustav Klimt (Austrian, 1862–1918). Klimt was trained as an architectural painter, painting murals and ceilings on public buildings. He was a prominent member of the Vienna Secession movement, promoting new, young artists. Klimt's primary subjects were women, painted in the nude, which were controversial as well as a celebration of sexuality, not widely accepted in 1914. He was influenced by Japanese art and is well known for "The Kiss" (1907–08), from his Golden Phase, which included the use of gold leaf. Klimt had an eclectic and distinct style and used symbolic elements to convey psychological ideas and emphasize freedom of art.

This cod, called "The Wave," is my Klimt interpretation of water and mermaids, which Marblehead is surrounded by! The seagull-Phoenix bird rises from the ashes to be reborn, and the fish are the mariner's guides to the four directions.

Artist Biography:  Holly graduated from the Vesper George School of Art in Boston and worked as an art director in advertising for many years before changing the course of her life. She has a BFA in Painting and Photography from the Massachusetts College of Art and Design, and her master's degree in Expressive Therapies from Lesley University.

Holly works in the arts, teaching as an expressive therapist and as a workshop leader using the arts for healing, recovery, and celebration across the lifespan. She is the photographer for the book The Dames: Honoring the Good Women of Farrell Court, Powder House Court and Roads School, Marblehead, Massachusetts 01945. Holly is a mixed media artist working in collage, assemblage, photography, and painting. She started painting Marblehead's surroundings when she moved to the town 20 years ago. The first building she painted was the King Hooper Mansion, home of the Marblehead Arts Association. Holly maintains Muse Art Studio in Salem and offers painting and drawing classes for all ages.
