Item Description
Title & Artist: "Caught Cod" – by Jennifer Groeber
Medium & Size: Collaged maps, buttons, and netting, with acrylic and tempera on wood. 21 7/8" L x 8 5/8" H x 3/4" D. For indoor display only.
Artist Statement: Whether working in painting, collage, or printmaking, Groeber's art focuses on identity and the friction that exists between the surface of our experiences and our complex pasts. How did we become who we are today, and what is the evidence of our journey? Although her work generally looks at the identity of a person or people within a family, in "Caught Cod" Groeber turns that lens of identity onto the town of Marblehead. Modern layered street maps of Marblehead and the surrounding communities are caught in fishing nets, brightly colored buoys reflecting on the water. Shell buttons are suspended in medium with the word COD shimmering just below the surface. Marblehead is simultaneously a place that looks to the future, block after block of beautiful homes, schools, quaint neighborhoods, and storefronts, while preserving its patina of age, its historical connection to the water, and the livelihood provided by the sea.
Artist Biography: Jennifer Groeber is an artist and writer living on the North Shore of Boston. She graduated from Yale University with a BA in Painting/Printmaking and an MFA from Maryland Institute College of Art. She has shown her work in select group shows as well as solo shows across the East Coast, including most recently at the Wenham Museum and as part of the Essex Arts Collaborative. Her paintings have also been selected to be included in the catalog exhibition, New American Paintings. You can find her making art, writing about the passage of time, and telling stories about parenting her four kids at her blog, Mama Art.
