Item Description

Title & Artist:  "Satis Cod" – by Alison Carey

Medium & Size:  Plaster, acrylic paint, and shellac on wood.  21 7/8" L x 8 5/8" H x 3/4" D.  For indoor display only.

Artist Statement:  Pastry is an exploration of art and technique. I piped this cod using plaster and my pastry tips, in a buttercream ruffle technique and brush embroidery. My original plan was to design a "wedding cake" cod and to paint it gold, as a nod to our golden cods, so unique to Marblehead. As I worked on the cod, and added and removed elements, the "cake" took on a weathered, time-worn quality. I chose to keep the cod weathered, because I find there is beauty in imperfection and a richness in history. "Satis Cod" is for Satis House, where Charles Dickens set his Miss Havisham, whose hopes and history were so perfectly captured by the evolution of her once pristine wedding cake.

Artist Biography:  Marblehead resident Alison Carey is a classically trained pastry chef (and art enthusiast). She graduated with high honors from the Professional Pastry Program at the Cambridge School of Culinary Arts, under the tutelage of Chef Roberta Dowling. Alison also graduated from Boston College with a Bachelor of Arts and a concentration in 19th Century British Fiction, and she enjoys finding nuanced ways to blend her love of literature into her creative pastry work.

Hosting Business:  "Satis Cod" is on display at Marblehead Antiques, 118 Pleasant St., Marblehead, MA.
