Item Description
Title & Artist: "Codaleidoscope" – by Katie Alexander
Medium & Size: Acrylic on wood. 21 7/8" L x 8 5/8" H x 3/4" D. For indoor display only.
Artist Statement: I was inspired to create this colorful, intricate cod after I discovered adult coloring books recently. I find their patterns soothing, and it can be quite relaxing to fill in a variety of mesmerizing designs. I thought it would be fun to create my own patterns for this cod.
I began by creating a mandala design around the eye, then expanded it in concentric circles along the cod. I challenged myself to create different shapes and designs for each section. I also incorporated the fins so that it would be a representational cod when seen from afar.
My artwork often reflects my attention to detail, and this project was no exception. I drew and painted the entire cod freehand. It was a labor of love!
Artist Biography: I am a Kindergarten teacher at Brookwood School in Manchester, MA, where I incorporate art into my curriculum on a regular basis. I grew up in Marblehead and now live in Beverly. I began taking art lessons at the age of 8, and in high school decided that I wanted to focus on oil painting. I took lessons for three years with Debra and Jack Highberger in their portfolio program at Acorn Gallery in Marblehead, and I’m so grateful for the incredible training I received from them.
Over the years I have exhibited artwork in the Marblehead Festival of Arts—in the Painting, Photography, Drawing, Crafts, and Mixed Media exhibits. I have received an Honorable Mention award in the Painting exhibit. I am currently a co-chair of the Festival's Painting exhibit.
I received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from Washington University in St. Louis with a minor in Fine Art, and a Master of Arts degree in Curriculum and Teaching from Teachers College, Columbia University. Art is my passion and hobby, and I try to find ways to pursue it in my free time.
